According to British media outlet Caughtoffside, Manchester United is interested in Sporting CP center defender Debastre and hopes to sign him in the winter transfer window.
Reports indicate that strengthening their defense is a top priority for Manchester United and other teams in January. According to football website Spboscore, candidates Manchester United is considering include 21-year-old Belgian center-back Debastre, who has excelled at Sporting CP.
Although Debastre’s contract with Sporting CP runs until 2029, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Villa are all considering a move for him. Both Manchester United and Arsenal have sent scouts to Portugal in recent weeks to assess his game in detail.
Reports indicate that Debastre has an €80 million release clause, and Manchester United may test Sporting CP with a €40 million offer. However, considering Anderlecht (Debastre’s former club) enjoys a 15% transfer fee, Sporting CP may be open to negotiations for less than the release clause.
Amorim, who previously coached Debast at Sporting CP, could play a key role in his transfer. Manchester United’s management is said to seek Amorim’s approval before approving a major outlay. If Amorim gives the green light, United’s interest could become more concrete.
Debast, 21, made 48 appearances for Sporting CP last season, contributing two goals and four assists. His current market value is €30 million.
